May 2016 Bloom Day

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day
What's blooming in the garden on the 15th of the month

Not much happening this May, so there are only a few photos this month. Instead of photographing the garden, I will be spending time looking through the other blogs. Most of these plants have been featured here before, but there is one new iris.
I helped organize and run a plant swap this spring for our county master gardener group. This bearded iris was picked up there. No name to it, but that doesn't matter. The color is really spectacular -- almost black and darker than the colors my camera picked up.

This is iris germanica 'Clarence' who is actually fragrant, and reblooming.

This is kalmia latifolia 'Sarah.' It is one of the darkest colored mountain laurels with red buds and deep pink blooms.

Geranium sanguineum is an unknown, obtained from a local neighborhood plant swap years ago, and a darn good ground cover. It resembles a magenta version of the popular 'Rozanne.'

Coreopsis auriculata ‘Nana’ -- another pickup from a neighborhood plant swap.

Check out other garden bloggers bloom day photos on our host's at blog May Dreams Gardens.

  2. That first iris is a real Prima Donna. Inky blue and full of itself :-)
Your Kalmia had me puzzled: I've seen it in the wild, in a pale pink [ calico bush ] and never knew it came in other colours as well.

  3. Those are both gorgeous irises. Ours are just starting to bud up, here in upstate New York. The freeze we are supposed to get tonight won't bother them, but I wonder which of the tree flowers out right now won't survive. Alas. Happy GBBD.

  4. Joanna,
That laurel cultivar is 'Sarah' and is many years old. I bought it for its color.

    Alana,
Good luck on keeping your blooms frost-free tonight. It will be pretty cold here, too.

  5. I am green with envy over those irises. I have very little luck with them in my garden. I see that we do have coreopsis in common. Happy Bloom Day.

  7. Love that black iris. I've been looking for one for ages. The slugs all go for mine though, such a nuisance.

  8. Not much happening in your garden? I would have thought it'd be bursting to overflowing at this time of year in Alexandria. I agree with everyone else: that black iris is a keeper!

  9. That is the most delicious black Iris - I think we all want one! I have made a note of Clarence as I am particularly fond of remontant Iris. It looks as if there is plenty going on in your garden this May.

  11. Rusty, Kathy, Sarah, Lee,
I wrote to offer a piece of this iris to a friend who declined. After she saw it in person, she kicked herself for not accepting it. Can't imagine turning down an offer for any plant.
